adidas SPZL SS25
The adidas SPZL Spring/Summer 2025 collection is here, with UK-actor James Nelson-Joyce joining the SPZL family. You might know him from Black Mirror, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant or more recently in Hulu’s A Thousand Blows (which is quite awesome in our opinion). The collection, curated as always by Gary Aspden, features six new footwear styles: TRX Mesh SPZL, Handball Cup SPZL, Failsworth SPZL, Roelee SPZL, Pampanga SPZL, and the A. Aspden SPZL. These designs remix and rediscover classic adidas elements with well thought-out tweaks, reflecting the brand's 75-year history and drawing inspiration from global sources.

The SPZL team engages in a "global treasure hunt" to find inspiration: remember their discovery of the deadstock shop in Buenos Aires? The new collection highlights national interpretations of adidas designs, such as the Failsworth SPZL, inspired by French-made adidas models, and the Pampanga SPZL, which utilizes an outsole from a Philippine-made adidas Squire. The A. Aspden SPZL model is a personal tribute from Gary to his late father, who was a hand engraver, with his father's signature replacing the traditional sportsman's name on the shoe.
Gary Aspden explains the design philosophy behind the SPZL footwear as emphasizing the goal of creating wearable products with a strong adidas sensibility and elevated details. He acknowledges the challenge of balancing innovative designs with commercial appeal, stating, "Making shoes with wild 'look at me' colourways and whacky storytelling can be fun – it looks and sounds good on social media, but to push the envelope on colour palettes whilst staying in the confines of the kind of shoes that people buy to wear is the goal – this can be a tough balance to strike." The collection also includes apparel and accessories, such as parka jackets, t-shirts, trousers, a hoodie, shorts, socks, a cap, and bags, expanding the SPZL wardrobe.
